He's made a lucrative living out of his television career, but David Koch has admitted his job isn't that important when put into perspective.

In an interview with The Sydney Morning Herald on Thursday, the 64-year-old Sunrise host described television as 'a bulls**t job'.

'Seven hate me saying this but TV really is a bulls**t job compared to what charity workers and emergency services do,' he confessed.

Despite considering his role unimportant when compared with essential workers, there's no denying the Channel Seven star has been financially compensated very well by his television career.

In August last year, Daily Mail Australia revealed Kochie, as he's affectionately known, is believed to earn $1million a year for hosting Sunrise.

Kochie has been hosting the breakfast TV show since 2002, and despite his hefty paycheck, he told The Sydney Morning Herald he doesn't rely on his television gig for income.

'I've never depended on TV for a living because even though you get paid well, it's high-risk,' he added.

And while he may be a television stalwart now, Kochie revealed that his nickname almost got him fired when he was starting out on Sunrise.

He confessed a former boss wanted him off the breakfast show because he 'believed nicknames had no place on a news program'.

Kochie said it was only because Seven owner Kerry Stokes intervened that he got to keep his job. 

Sunrise has gone on to become a ratings winner throughout Kochie's tenure on the show, consistently beating rival Today on Channel Nine.

'I still love this job,' he said, admitting he has no intention of moving on anytime soon.
